Mac was dozing when the gray door swung open. Paul entered, followed by a scowling uniformed officer.

“Well?” said Mac.

Smirking, Paul sat down and folded his hands, and Mac felt an enormous surge of relief.

“They’ve agreed to drop all charges and offer a public apology,” said Paul, “if you promise not to sue.”

"Good God, Paul,” said Mac. “You’re a freaking wizard.”

“Yes, I know,” said Paul. He produced some papers. “Sign here and here, and we’ll get you released.” Mac took the pen and started signing. “Incidentally, why did you go to a Pure Earth rally?”

Mac glanced at the uniformed officer. “I wanted to investigate the murder for myself. It seemed fairly clear that Pure Earth had something to do with Harkin’s murder.”

“Not a bad idea, all told, since Carey didn’t exactly do a bang-up job with the investigation,” said Paul. The uniform’s scowl deepened. Paul glanced over the papers once more and handed them to the officer. “But it’s not your problem anymore.”

“No,” said Mac. The relief made him light-headed. That, or it was the exhaustion. But Paul was right. Without Detective Carey to try and force a conviction on Mac, Jeffrey Harkin’s murder had become somebody else’s problem. Senator Kelsey’s corruption, Jerome Walter’s madness, all of it was no longer Mac’s problem. “No, it’s not.”

“Right,” said Paul. “Well, that’s it. Let’s go.”

The officer unlocked Mac’s handcuffs, and they left the room. Mac stopped at the restroom long enough to take a much-needed piss, and then at the desk to pick up his confiscated possessions, and followed Paul out of the building. A few officers gave them dirty looks as they departed, but no one hindered them.

“Can you give me a ride back home?” said Mac. “Unless the police were nice enough to bring my car.”

“No can do,” said Paul. “I’ve got to get back to the office and get my presentation ready, so I can play this up to the senior partners tomorrow.” He grinned. “No rest for the wicked, I’m afraid. But you don’t have to take the bus. Your brother’s here with a cab.”

“Tom came down here?” said Mac.

“Big, scary guy, right? Beard, ponytail, looks like he’s been through the wringer?”

“That’s him.” Mac glanced at his cell phone and blinked in surprise. It was past midnight already.

Paul headed for the big parking structure behind the police station. “Your brother is waiting on the curb around the corner. I’ll be in touch.”

“Look, Paul,” said Mac. “I owe you. Big time.”

They shook hands.

“Actually,” said Paul. “You owe me about six thousand dollars.”

Mac sighed. “No price on freedom, right?”

“Damn right,” said Paul. He mopped his forehead with a handkerchief, stuffed it back into his pocket. “I’ll be in touch.”

He walked off. Mac rounded the corner. He had a headache, partly from exhaustion, but mostly from Carey’s backhand, and his chest ached. Tomorrow he’d have to get a chest x-ray, make sure Carey hadn’t broken any ribs. That damned arrogant jackass.

Well, Carey was paying for it now.

Tom waited by the cab. Most people would have thought he looked impassive, almost stone-faced.
